Cards baseball takes a backseat to the passing of Lil Musial

I was going to talk today about the series in which the Cards took 2 of 3 from the Pittsburgh Pirates, until I saw the news this morning. Stan Musial’s wife, Lil, passed away yesterday at the age of 91. Lillian Susan Labash was born in 1920, and met Stan in 1934 when he was 15 and pitching semi-pro baseball. After being high school sweethearts, Lil and Stan were married in 1940. The couple stayed married for over 70 years, and by all accounts, Musial was as good a husband as he was a ballplayer.

Cardinals Chairman Bill Dewitt Jr. released a statement and said: “Lil was the love of Stan’s life, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of so many people. For her selfless work in the organizing the Cardinals Pinch Hitters group to her more recent efforts to help homeless, runaway girls with the Covenant House, Lil was always helping others. The entire Cardinals organization extends its sincere condolences to Stan, their children Richard, Gerry, Janet and Jean, and their eleven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.”

The Cards start a 3 game series with the Houston Astros tonight.
