Cards close to signing Roy Oswalt?

The Roy Oswalt rumors are heating up and starting to grab some attention. It has been reported that Oswalt has turned down a 1 year, $12 million offer from the Red Sox as well as a 1 year, $10 million offer from the Tigers. The Cardinals are reportedly in the running for Oswalt with the Texas Rangers now. The Cards offered Oswalt a 1 year, $5 million deal a few weeks ago. The Sporting News even reported that a deal with the Cardinals was complete as of last night. Here’s the link:

Cardinal fans should feel good about the possibility of getting Oswalt. You can never have enough pitching. With Adam Wainwright coming back from TJS, Chris Carpenter entering his age 37 season after pitching 270+ innings in 2011, and the extra workload on Jaime Garcia last season during the playoffs, signing Oswalt just makes sense. Add that to the fact that Kyle Lohse is likely to experience a dead arm phase because of his increased workload from 2010-2011 from his forearm surgery and you have to wonder if signing Oswalt is more of a necessity rather than an insurance policy.

Even though the Cardinals have 5 starters signed for 2012 at this point, the chance that they all make it through spring training injury free seems like a risk. Oswalt is somewhat of a risk himself with his recent struggles with low back problems, but it’s a risk worth taking. Another great thing about Oswalt is his desire to pitch in St. Louis that he has stated on more than one occasion. At this point in his career, Oswalt has made nearly $95 million and seems to be chasing a championship. If Oswalt comes to St. Louis, he may get just that. If all goes well, a postseason starting rotation of Wainwright, Carpenter, Oswalt and Garcia would be tough to beat.

    J.D.,

If you look at how many Cardinal starters have gone down with injury since 2007, it would be wise to add one now, figure out the rest later. I wish more fans were pumped at the idea of getting Roy. He also owns a farm in MO to hunt on, so that may help.
